Abstract

Asphalt mixtures often experience common damages such as low-temperature cracking, high-temperature rutting, moisture damage, and fatigue cracking. Modifying asphalt mix using a single modifier participates in road life enlargement, but it may have drawbacks. To address these issues, research is being done on the impact of single and compound additives on asphalt and asphalt mix. Adding fibers to asphalt mix has been discovered in past investigations to promote increased longevity and enhanced functionality of roads. Nanomaterials possess exceptional characteristics such as high functional density, remarkable sensitivity, unique surface effects, extensive surface area, significant strain resistance, and catalytic activity, all of which contribute to enhancing the performance of flexible pavements. In this regard, both fibers and nanomaterials can improve the properties of hot mix asphalt (HMA).
This article aims to offer a thorough understanding of the use of fibers, nanomaterials, and their combinations with other additives in asphalt binders and mixtures, drawing from an extensive review of the literature. It concluded that Pavement construction utilizing composite technology can significantly improve the service life and overall performance of asphalt mixes compared to the use of single additives.
